DTC Troubleshooting: B1170

DTC B1170:  Gauge Control Module Lost Communication with the VSA Modulator-control Unit (VSA Message)


1.Clear the DTCs with the HDS.

2.Turn the ignition switch OFF, and then back ON (II).

3.Wait for 6 seconds or more.

4.Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Is DTC B1170 indicated?


YES - Go to 5.


NO - Intermittent failure. The gauge control module (tach) is OK at this time.n


5.Check for DTCs with the HDS.

Are all of DTCs B1168, B1170, B1178, B1183 and B1187 also indicated at the same time?


YES - Troubleshoot DTC B1178.n


NO - Go to 6.


6.Check for VSA system DTCs with the HDS.

Is any DTCs indicated?


YES - Go to the indicated troubleshooting.n


NO - Go to 7.

7.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

8.Disconnect the gauge control module (tach) 36P connector.

9.Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector.

10.Connect the gauge control module (tach) 36P connector No. 1 and No. 19 terminals and body ground with jumper wires.

 

11.Check for continuity between the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector terminals No. 38 and No. 39 and body ground individually.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit, and recheck. If DTC B1170 is indicated again, replace the gauge control module (tach).n


NO - Repair an open in the wire.n
