Camshaft Replacement

Removal

NOTE: Keep the cam chain away from magnetic fields.

1.Remove the cylinder head cover.

2.Set the No. 1 piston at top dead center (TDC). The ‘‘UP'' mark (A) on the cam chain sprocket should be at the top. Align the TDC marks (B) on the intake camshaft gear and the exhaust camshaft gear.

3.Make a reference mark (A) across the cam chain sprocket and cam chain.

4.Remove the auto-tensioner.

5.Hold the exhaust camshaft with an open-end wrench, then loosen the cam chain sprocket mounting bolt.

6.Remove the cam chain sprocket mounting bolt (A), then remove the cam chain sprocket (B).

NOTE: Do not drop the key.

7.Remove the camshaft holder bolts. To prevent damaging the camshafts, unscrew the bolts, in sequence, two turns at a time.

8.Remove the upper camshaft holders and camshafts.

Installation

NOTE: Keep the cam chain away from magnetic fields.

1.Align the punch mark on the exhaust camshaft gear in the center of the two punch marks on the intake camshaft gear, then install the camshafts on the lower camshaft holder.

2.Position the camshaft journal marks correctly, and position the arrows to face the cam chain side, then install the upper camshaft holders as shown illustration.

3.Tighten the bolts in sequence to the specified torque.

Specified Torque:
8 x 1.25 mm
22 N·m (2.2 kgf·m, 16 lbf·ft)
6 x 1.0 mm
12 N·m (1.2 kgf·m, 8.7 lbf·ft)
6 x 1.0 mm Bolts: (21), (22), (23)

4.Install the cam chain around the camshaft sprocket aligned with the reference mark (A), then install the camshaft sprocket on the camshaft.

5.Apply new engine oil to the threads and flange of the camshaft sprocket mounting bolt, and install it. Hold the exhaust camshaft with an open-end wrench, then tighten the bolt.

Specified Torque:
12 x 1.25 mm
118 N·m (12.0 kgf·m, 86.8 lbf·ft)

6.Install the auto-tensioner.

7.Install the cylinder head cover.
