F-CAN Circuit Troubleshooting

NOTE: Information marked with an asterisk (*) applies to the CANL line.

1.Turn the ignition switch OFF, and wait 1 minute.

2.Disconnect ECM connector No. 2 (58P).

3.Disconnect the HDS from the DLC.

4.Measure resistance between ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 47 and No. 48.

 

Is there about 90-111 W?


YES - Go to 35.


NO - Go to 5.

5.Disconnect the gauge control module (tach) 36P connector.

6.Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector, and the yaw rate/lateral acceleration sensor 4P connector.n

7.Disconnect SRS unit connector A (28P).

8.Disconnect EPS control unit connector D (28P).

9.Check for continuity between ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 47 and No. 48.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Repair short in the wire between ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 47 and No. 48*.n


NO - Go to 10.

10.Connect ECM connector No.2 terminal No. 47 to body ground with a jumper wire.

 

11.Check for continuity between gauge control module (tach) 36P connector terminal No. 1 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 12.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the gauge control module (tach) and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 47.n

12.Check for continuity between VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector terminal No. 39 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 13.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the VSA modulator-control unit and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 47.n


13.Check for continuity between SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 11 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 14.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the SRS unit and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 47.n

14.Check for continuity between EPS control unit connector D (28P) terminal No. 1 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 15.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the EPS control unit and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 47.n


15.Remove the jumper wire from ECM connector No. 2 (58P).

16.Connect ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 48 to body ground with a jumper wire.

 

17.Check for continuity between gauge control module (tach) 36P connector terminal No. 19 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 18.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the gauge control module (tach) and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 48.n


18.Check for continuity between VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector terminal No. 38 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 19.


NO - Repair open in the wire between VSA modulator-control unit and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 48.n

19.Check for continuity between SRS unit connector A (28P) terminal No. 12 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 20.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the SRS unit and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 48.n


20.Check for continuity between EPS control unit connector D (28P) terminal No. 15 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Go to 21.


NO - Repair open in the wire between the EPS control unit and ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 48.n

21.Reconnect the gauge control module (tachometer) 36P connector.

22.Measure resistance between ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 47 and No. 48.

 

Is there about 108-132 W?


YES - Go to 23.


NO - Substitute a known-good gauge control module (tach). If the HDS communicate with the ECM, replace the original gauge control module (tach).n


23.Disconnect the gauge control module (tach) 36P connector.

24.Reconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector.

25.Measure resistance between ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 47 and No. 48.

 

Is there about 2.34-2.86 KW?


YES - Go to 26.


NO - Substitute a known-good VSA modulator-control unit. If the HDS communicate with the ECM, replace the original VSA modulator-control unit.n


26.Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector.

27.Reconnect the yaw rate/ lateral acceleration sensor 4P connector.

28.Measure resistance between ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 47 and No. 48.

 

Is there about 2.34-2.86 KW?


YES - Go to 29.


NO - Substitute a known-good yaw rate/lateral acceleration sensor. If the HDS communicate with the ECM, replace the original yaw rate/lateral acceleration sensor.n


29.Disconnect the yaw rate/ lateral acceleration sensor 4P connector.

30.Reconnect SRS unit connector A (28P).

31.Measure resistance between ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 47 and No. 48.

 

Is there about 2.34-2.86 KW?


YES - Go to 32.


NO - Substitute a known-good SRS unit. If the HDS communicate with the ECM, replace the original SRS unit.n


32.Disconnect SRS unit connector A (28P).

33.Reconnect EPS control unit connector D (28P).

34.Measure resistance between ECM connector No. 2 terminals No. 47 and No. 48.

 

Is there about 2.34-2.86 KW?


YES - Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM.n


NO - Substitute a known-good EPS control unit. If the HDS communicate with the ECM, replace the original EPS control unit.n

35.Disconnect the gauge control module (tach) 36P connector.

36.Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector, and the yaw rate/ lateral acceleration sensor 4P connector.

37.Disconnect SRS unit connector A (28P).

38.Disconnect EPS control unit connector D (28P).

39.Check for continuity between ECM connector No.2 terminal No. 47 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Repair short in the wire between ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 47 and the gauge control module (tach), the VSA modulator-control unit, the yaw rate/ lateral acceleration sensor, the SRS unit, the EPS control unit, or the DLC.n


NO - Go to 40.

40.Check for continuity between ECM connector No.2 terminal No. 48 and body ground.

 

Is there continuity?


YES - Repair short in the wire between ECM connector No. 2 terminal No. 48 and the gauge control module (tach), the VSA modulator-control unit, the yaw rate/ lateral acceleration sensor, the SRS unit, the EPS control unit, or the DLC.n


NO - Go to 41.

41.Reconnect all connectors.

42.Connect the HDS to the DLC.

43.Disconnect the gauge control module (tach) 36P connector.

44.Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and turn on the HDS.

Does the HDS identify the vehicle?


YES - Replace the gauge control module (tach).n


NO - Go to 45.


45.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

46.Reconnect the gauge control module (tach) 36P connector.

47.Disconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector.

48.Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and turn on the HDS.

Does the HDS identify the vehicle?


YES - Replace the VSA modulator-control unit.n


NO - Go to 49.


49.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

50.Reconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector.

51.Disconnect the yaw rate/ lateral acceleration sensor 4P connector.

52.Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and turn on the HDS.

Does the HDS identify the vehicle?


YES - Replace the yaw rate/lateral acceleration sensor.n


NO - Go to 53.

53.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

54.Reconnect the VSA modulator-control unit 46P connector and the yaw rate/ lateral acceleration sensor 4P connector.

55.Disconnect SRS unit connector A (28P).

56.Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and turn on the HDS.

Does the HDS identify the vehicle?


YES - Replace the SRS unit.n


NO - Go to 57.


57.Turn the ignition switch OFF.

58.Reconnect SRS unit connector A (28P).

59.Disconnect EPS control unit connector D (28P).

60.Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and turn on the HDS.

Does the HDS identify the vehicle?


YES - Replace the EPS control unit.n


NO - Update the ECM if it does not have the latest software, or substitute a known-good ECM, then recheck. If the symptom/indication goes away with a known-good ECM, replace the original ECM.n
