Engine Removal

NOTE:

1.Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, or the navigation system, then write down the customer's audio presets.

2.Secure the hood in the wide open position (support rod in the lower hole).

 

3.Relieve the fuel pressure.

4.Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then disconnect the positive cable.

5.Remove the battery.

6.Remove the air intake duct.

 

7.Remove the under-cowl panel.

8.Remove the air cleaner housing assembly.

9.Remove the battery cables (A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box.

 

10.Remove the harness clamp (B).

11.Remove the engine control module (ECM) cover (A), then remove the three bolts (B) securing the ECM.

 

12.Disconnect the ECM connectors (A) and the engine wire harness connectors (B).

 

13.Remove the harness clamps (C).

14.Remove the quick-connect fitting cover (A), then disconnect the fuel feed hose.

 

15.Remove the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister hose (A) and brake booster vacuum hose (B).

 

16.Remove the steering wheel.

17.Remove the steering joint cover (A).

 

18.Make a reference mark (B) across the steering joint and steering gearbox pinion shaft. Remove the steering joint bolt (C), then disconnect the steering joint from the steering gearbox pinion shaft (D).

19.Remove the shift cable.

20.Remove the clutch slave cylinder, and clutch line bracket mounting bolt.

21.Remove the drive belt.

22.Remove the radiator cap.

23.Raise the vehicle on the hoist to full height.

24.Remove the front wheels.

25.Remove the engine undercover.

 

26.Loosen the drain plug in the radiator, and drain the engine coolant.

27.Drain the engine oil.

28.Drain the transmission fluid

29.Disconnect the secondary heated oxygen sensor (secondary HO2S) connector (A), then remove the three way catalytic converter (TWC) (B).

 

30.Disconnect the connectors from the steering gearbox.

 

31.Separate the stabilizer links from the dampers.

32.Separate the tie-rod end ball joints from the knuckles.

33.Separate the knuckles from the lower arms.

34.Remove the driveshafts. Coat all precision-finished surfaces with clean engine oil. Tie plastic bags over the driveshaft ends.

35.Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch connector (A), then remove the A/C compressor (B) without disconnecting the A/C hoses (With A/C).

 

36.Lower the vehicle on the hoist.

37.Remove the upper radiator hose (A) and lower radiator hose (B).

 

38.Remove the heater hoses.

 

39.Attach the chain hoist to the engine as shown.

 

40.Make sure the hoist brackets are positioned properly. Raise the hoist to full height.

41.Remove the lower torque rod.

 

42.Remove the subframe.

 

43.Make sure the hoist brackets are positioned properly. Lower the vehicle on the hoist.

44.Remove the side engine mount bracket mounting nuts.

 

45.Remove the transmission mounting bolt and nuts (A).

 

46.Remove the ground cable (B).

47.Check that the engine/transmission is completely free of vacuum hoses, fuel and coolant hoses, and electrical wiring.

48.Slowly lower the engine/transmission assembly about 150 mm (6 in.). Check once again that all hoses and electrical wiring are disconnected and free from the engine/transmission, then lower it all the way.

49.Disconnect the chain hoist from the engine/ transmission assembly.

50.Raise the vehicle all the way, and remove the engine/transmission assembly from under the vehicle.
